Challenger Day

Hundreds of students across Henrico County Public Schools will celebrate inclusivity, sportsmanship and team-building at this year’s Challenger Day, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Tuckahoe Park in western Henrico.

Challenger Day, which began as an offshoot of the Challenger Division of Little League Baseball in 2012, introduces the fundamentals of baseball and softball to students with physical and cognitive disabilities from more than 35 elementary school classrooms over the course of a fun, inviting and inclusive day, which has been held at Tuckahoe Park for the past decade. Volunteers from Henrico Schools and various partnering businesses and organizations assist to provide this unique experience.

Along with the various baseball activities designed for skills training, sportsmanship and team building, students with physical disabilities will be able to play on the adaptive Challenger Field, which was made possible by a public-private partnership between Henrico County and Tuckahoe Sports, Inc. Also on-site will be side activities, crafts, therapy dogs, a picnic lunch, and visits from Darth Vader, Nutzy and Nutasha of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, and other special guests from the local community.

Tuckahoe Sports, Inc., sponsors Challenger Day and is assisted by three co-partners: Henrico Education Foundation, Henrico Recreation and Parks, and Tuckahoe Little League.

Challenger Day lasts from 9:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m., with schools arriving via buses at staggered times throughout the morning. The rain date for the event is Thursday, Oct. 16.

Challenger Day is not open to the public, but members of the media are invited to attend. If you plan to attend, please contact Dylan Garner, HCPS communications specialist, at cdgarner@henrico.k12.va.us, or Valerie Dean at vgdean@alumni.virginia.edu.
