In a hands-on educational experience, EMT students at ACE at Hermitage recently completed a pig heart dissection as part of their cardiovascular emergencies curriculum. This exercise aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of what happens to the heart when a patient experiences a cardiovascular emergency, which is crucial for their treatment of these patients.
Students learned to identify key features of the heart, including the atria, ventricles, valves, major blood vessels, and major arteries. By tracing the path of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood through the heart, students gained insights into the heart's function and its vital importance for normal daily function.
The dissection provided a unique opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. Beyond enhancing their anatomical knowledge, the dissection fostered a greater appreciation for the complexity and efficiency of the human body. Students left the lab with a stronger foundation for understanding what happens to the heart during a cardiovascular emergency and a renewed enthusiasm for their future careers in healthcare.
Overall, the pig heart dissection at ACE at Hermitage was a resounding success, equipping EMT students with valuable insights and skills that will serve them well in their medical training and beyond.
